Arianna Occhipinti has been making wine since she was 17. Now in her late 30's, she is a highly regarded natural winemaker not only at home in Sicily but throughout the world. Her estate is in the southeastern corner of Sicily near Monti Iblei, where she cultivates eight acres of vineyard according to biodynamic methods, and leaves 40 acres uncultivated in order to promote a local ecosystem in greater balance.
“Contrada” is a word used to identify a small district in the Italian countryside, and so Occhipinti’s “Vini di Contrada” are intended to highlight the soil and potential of various districts in and around her home base of Vittoria, in Sicily. This Grillo is from the Santa Margherita contrada, a property she acquired and planted in 2016.
Aged for a year in large Slavonian oak and bottled unfined and unfiltered, this is a complex white, with intense aromas of citrus and white flowers. Alcohol and acidity are in perfect balance, and the wine has a long, dry mineral finish.
