"Grotte Alte" is Arianna Occhipinti's only DOCG wine, named for the limestone ridges on which the Occhipinti estate lies, straddling and combining both Mediterranean and mountain influences, with red and sandy clay soils over limestone at about 280 meters. Coming from a selection of older vines, and with a longer maceration and barrel aging, the Grotte Alte is essentially a "grown-up," appellation-designated version of her SP68 red IGT wine. This is perhaps the most serious wine from Occhipinti, aged in large botti for an extended time.
A beautiful dark red color, with cherry and herbal notes on the nose and a full, round, velvety texture.
