Marco De Bartoli is considered one of Sicily's winemaking pioneers for his longstanding commitment to the native white grape varieties, Grillo and Zibibbo; from his Samperi winery just west of Marsala he produces several wines made from Grillo, including this one.
Vecchio Samperi, named for the district that houses De Bartoli's country estate, is made using the traditional solera method, in which small quantities of young wine are added to wines of older vintages as they pass through a sequence of wooden barrels, similar to the way Sherry is made. The result is a very special wine that drinks somewhere between Sherry and Madeira, with notes of nuts, dried fruit, spice, caramel, and mandarin orange.
