Gina Giugni is a second generation biodynamic farmer and winemaker. She started Lady of the Sunshine in 2017, with a focus on regenerative, organic, and biodynamic farming, with the goal of making natural wines that reflect the purity of the place they come from. Gina also farms the 6.5 acre Chene Vineyard, located in the Edna Valley appellation. Since her takeover in 2018, the vineyard is now a Demeter certified biodynamic vineyard. Gina and her husband, Mikey, run Scar of the Sea and Lady of the Sunshine together out of their winery in San Luis Obispo, CA.
Botanical Solera No. 5. is part of Lady of the Sunshine’s experimental solera series, a non-vintage skin-contact white blend that incorporates multiple grape varieties and multiple years of wine held in a continuous fractional blending system. The core includes skin-fermented Albariño, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris sourced from biodynamically and regeneratively farmed vineyards along the SLO Coast, primarily the Bassi and Chêne Vineyards. Each year, a portion is drawn off and refreshed with the new vintage, creating a wine that carries both freshness and aged complexity.
“Botanical” references the wine's herbal, slightly bitter aromatics and a structure reminiscent of vermouth or fino sherry. Fermented with native yeasts, aged in a mix of neutral barrels and demijohns, and bottled unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfur, the wine offers savory citrus, dried flowers, tea-like tannins, and oceanic salinity.
