Florèz Wines was started by James Jelks in 2017. James grew up in the Santa Cruz area and studied winemaking at UC Davis. He worked in wineries all over the world for 10 years before returning home to make wine in the Santa Cruz area. He farms some vineyards himself, always dry-farmed, and also sources some fruit from organic and sustainable vineyards. He always works with native yeasts, does not use additives except for a minimal amount of sulfur at bottling, and does not fine or filter the wines.
Jelks's named this wine Pinard after the slang term popularized by the wine rations of French troops in WWI, which the infantrymen deeply loved. These soldiers also had a slang name of ‘poilu’ or ‘the hairy one’ as they were typically rustic countrymen sporting bushy mustaches or beards. This cuvee tends to be experimental with different blending components each year. Muscat always plays a part giving an aromatic quality to this delicious light red.
A translucent reddish pink, with a lifted and heady nose of cherry, rose, mandarin, and white pepper. Medium bodied with an aromatic palate. Served slightly chilled.
