Ca’ La Bionda, a family-run estate in the heart of Marano di Valpolicella, has been working their hillside vineyards since 1902. Now in its fourth generation, the Castellani family manages roughly 28 hectares of organically farmed vines, with biodiversity and careful soil management at the core of their philosophy. Sheep graze between rows, and no synthetic chemicals are used, ensuring that each harvest reflects the rhythm of the land. The estate’s dedication to hands-on, sustainable viticulture extends naturally to the cellar, with native yeast fermentations and minimal intervention.
Grapes are hand-picked and fermented in stainless steel after a brief maceration, then rested in neutral vessels to preserve freshness. In the glass, the wine is lively and precise: aromas of red cherry, raspberry, and crushed violet unfold alongside hints of dried herbs and pink pepper. Medium-bodied with vibrant acidity and a silky, persistent finish, it carries the mineral tension and layers of fruit that to us reminded of a terrific Cru Beaujolais.
