Country: Italy
Region: Sicily
Type: Red Wine
Grape: 90% Nero d'Avola/10% Nerello Mascalese
Contrada Passofonduto is located about 25 km from Agrigento, on the south central coast of Sicily. In 2015, Guiseppe Cipolla began planting vines on land his family had cultivated to other crops like grains, olives, fruits and legumes. He farms organically and has planted his vineyards to Nero d'Avola and Nerello Mascalese for the reds, and for whites, Grillo, Catarratto and Zibibbo.
Fruit for this wine comes from the Passofonduto contrada (vineyard district) grown using the “Alberello” vine training technique on clayey-calcareous soil with an important presence of chalk. Grapes are de-stemmed, lightly pressed and fermented in small wine vessels with maceration on the skins for about six days. The result is a rich and intense wine, with plenty of black fruits and lovely minerality.
