40 years ago, Hermann Krutzler bottled the first of his high quality wines, with distinctive style and character. His son Reinhold adopted this pioneering spirit and created the master blend, Perwolff, with his father and brother, Erich, in the 1990s, thereby ushering in a new era for Austrian reds that have since become successful all over the world. The next generation is now continuing this successful journey with Clemens Krutzler, who, only in his early 20's, is breaking from the mold and experimenting with varying maceration times for his Welschriesling and Blaufränkisch-based wines. All wines are raised sur lie in used oak barrels – a rarity here. The entire process is low intervention, with the goal of creating a new style of wines that are serious yet full of lightness, liveliness, and refreshing elegance.
A vibrant blend of half Weissburgunder, with equal parts Welschriesling and Gruner Veltliner and a dose of Riesling, interplanted, hand picked and cofermented. They are 60 year old vines planted east facing and in the iron rich soils of Ried Hummergraben in Eisenberg. Clemens preserves the vitality and freshness of these aromatic whites with whole bunch pressing. They are then aged on the lees for 10 months in used oak barrels giving the wine extraordinary texture and depth. Bright minerality with notes of green apple, quince and ripe apricots. Dried herb flavors lend a savory element to the wine.
