Grape: Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo)/Souzão/Touriga Nacional
Winemaker Evan Lewandowski worked at the Binner Estate in Alsace, then returned to Utah with plans to plant a vineyard. In the meantime, he is sourcing organic grapes from vineyards in Mendocino and making pure, vibrant natural wines.
Fruit for this wine comes from Fox Hill Vineyard in Mendocino, which is organically farmed and planted almost entirely to Italian varieties, with the exception of the Portuguese block. Evan has found success in bringing Souzão and Touriga Nacional, two vibrant and intensely colored varieties typically used in fortified wine, to life as a pink wine.
The Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo) was whole cluster bladder pressed without skin contact. The Souzão and Touriga Nacional were foot-stomped and then bladder pressed after a 2-hour maceration. Fermentation was spontaneous with native yeast. The wine underwent full malolactic conversion and spent 5 months on lees. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, with no added sulfites.
Deep pink and slightly hazy. Crunchy and bright, with fresh watermelon and ripe tomato skins on the palate, followed by high-energy finish.
