Type: Red Wine
Iole Rabasco was lucky to inherit a small vineyard on which chemicals had never been used, thus making her goal of producing organic, natural wines that much easier. The 3.5 hectare estate is located in the village of Pianella, in the heart of Abruzzo. The area offers a unique set of micro climates particular to this north-central corner of Abruzzo; the Adriatic is some 40 kilometers away, while the base of Gran Sasso flanks the western edge of the Rabasco property.
The vines across the property, almost all Montepulciano with a couple rows of Trebbiano, average 40 years of age and rest at some 450 meters above sea level. Soils are calcareous clay, mixed with alluvial sediment and fossil remains. Yields are kept low but not excessively low as Iole prefers her wines with more acidity and freshness than power and extract.
This wine undergoes spontaneous fermentation with 4-7 days skin maceration (depending on vintage). Aged in stainless steel with zero added sulfur and no filtering or fining. A wonderfully bright wine, with crunchy red fruits, crisp acidity and clean minerality. Even better with a light chill.
