Jean François ("Jeff") Coutelou works 13 hectares of vines in the town of Puimisson which is located just north of Béziers in the Languedoc (southern France). The farm has been certified organic since 1987. Old, nearly extinct grape varieties are co-planted on his property, intricately trained and in tune with the various soil types. Jeff has created a vast polycultural environment, replanting trees and bands of ancient flowers and grains, rescuing insects and the rich microbial life of the soil. His wines are refreshing and very drinkable.
Matabu is a relatively new cuvée for Jeff, made from young vines of Cinsault blended with Grenache and Syrah. 3-day maceration. A very fresh, light-medium bodied red with spice and subtle tannins that has managed to preserve the identity of the grapes and the region.
