Type: Orange Wine
Grape: Sauvignon Blanc/Vermentino
“Who Goes There?” is blended from 2019 Vermentino (30%) and 2020 Sauvignon Blanc (70%). The Vermentino is from a barrel that was destined for the winery's 2019 Rorick Heritage Vineyard Vermentino, however it developed a layer of flor and thus a character that didn’t suit the overall blend, so they held it back a year to keep an eye on it. The Sauvignon Blanc component was harvested in early August 2020, and fermented on its skins like a red wine for about three weeks, before being pressed to age in a mix of new and used acacia barrels. After a few trials, they blended the single barrel of Vermentino with two barrels of Sauvignon Blanc in January 2021, added a small amount of sulfur (25 ppm), and let the combined blend rest in neutral barrels for a few months until it was bottled in late April.
The wine is salty and textural, hinting at tropical and citrus fruit both preserved and fresh, with a bit of mystery.
