Type: Red Wine
Eugene Maret founded this Domaine in 1912, and vintage 2011 marked the final vintage made by his grandson Michel Maret before handing over the reins to his daughter, fourth generation winemaker Veronique. The Châteauneuf Vieilles Vignes comes from vines planted by Eugene shortly after starting the domaine. The old vineyard is mostly Grenache and Maret ferments that in wooden vat and then ages it in very large, very old, oak foudre. The Mourvedre ferments in stainless steel and then goes into less old demi-muids (about 3x the size of a barrique).
While the 2011 Vieilles Vignes has more concentration and power than some Charbonniere wines, it shares the same wide-open, fleshy, texture as Vacqueyras--it's mouthfilling and fleshy without being heavy.
