Englishman John Dunkley, along with his Italian wife, Palmina Abbagnano, founded the pioneering Riecine estate in 1971 when they purchased 1.5 hectares of land from Badia a Coltibuono, a local monastery. The estate is known for its advocacy of Sangiovese as the noble grape of Chianti, producing wines that highlighted the varietal and the quality wines it makes. Today, the winery is run by Alessandro Campatelli and Amandine Zeman. The certified organic vineyards cover 20 hectares in Gaiole in Chianti at different altitudes, exposures and soil types. All wines are crafted from hand-sorted grapes that are crushed by foot and fermented with native yeasts in small, concrete fermentors.
The Riecine Chianti Classico is made from 100% Sangiovese from different vineyard sites throughout Gaiole in Chianti. Aromas of cranberry, sour cherry, tobacco, and a strong mineral note. The palate is vibrant with notes of cherry and blackberry, fine tannins and bright acidity.
