Country: Italy
Region: Tuscany
Type: Red Wine
Grape: Prugnole Gentile (Sangiovese)/Canaiolo/Mammolo
Poderi Sanguineto is the family estate of Dora Forsoni in Montepulciano, the legendary hill town of southern Tuscany. Dora and her partner Patrizia Castiglioni continue to do all the work on the farm where Dora's father taught her from generations of knowledge how to tend the old vines of true Prugnolo Gentile, Mammolo, Canaiolo, Nero Toscano and Sangiovese and how to make the wine as it has been made for generations.
Prugnole Gentile is the variant of Sangiovese in and around Montepulciano and is the majority of this blend, as is traditional and required by law (70% minimum). All of the fruit is from organically farmed estate vines, many of them very old, and all of them tended carefully by Dora Forsoni on his 50-hectare family estate.
Farming is organic. The grapes are hand-harvested and de-stemmed but with many whole berries remaining intact; the fermentation with native yeasts and maceration in concrete is long and slow, as is the gentle pressing to get to the core of each berry (where Dora believes the sweetest part of the fruit lies). The wine is aged in botti (large barrels) for two years before release.
A mid-weight wine with medium tannins. bright red fruit, subtle floral notes, and sweet spices cut by bright acidity.
